Penumbra is a leading Scottish voluntary organisation working in the field of mental health. Penumbra provides an extensive range of inclusive, recovery-focused services to support people with mental health problems to discover and move towards their desired life.

You would be responsible for the development of individual support and support groups for people who self harm, their families and carers, and professionals in contact with them. You will also help young people to become involved in influencing the development of future services which support their mental health and well-being.

Job Description

Job Title: Part Time Development Worker

Responsible To: Area Manager

Salary: £21,399- £25,228 (Point 27 to point 32) Pro Rata

Working Hours: Full time 36.25 hours but job share also considered

Special Conditions: Hours may include some evenings and weekends
Local travel

Job Summary

• To establish and support the development of individual support and support groups for people who self harm, their families and carers, and professionals in contact with them.
• To support young people to become involved in influencing the development of future services which support their mental health and well-being


Main Aims of Development Worker Post:

1. To establish and support the development of self-help support groups for young people(11-25) who self-harm, parents and carers, and professionals

2. To bring together the individual support groups around common issues

3. To establish links with appropriate planning groups

4. To co-ordinate the North Ayrshire Self-Harm Project Steering Group and a young people’s Advisory Group

5. To facilitate and provide training around self-harm, including supporting young people who self-harm to be an integral part of the training process.

6. To promote good practice across agencies

7. To make accessible and available resources for organisations and individuals

8. To liaise with other interested groups locally, nationally and internationally

9. To collaborate with local press and media

10. Engage and involve young people in influencing the development of future services


PERSON SPECIFICATION

JOB TITLE: Part Time Development Worker


Education/ Qualifications/ Training Essential
• Good Level of educational attainment
• Knowledge and understanding of Self-Harm and of issues affecting Young People’s mental health and well-being.
Desirable
• An appropriate qualification in a relevant field
• Understanding of community work and community development.
Experience Essential
• Working with young people, parents/carers other professionals
• Working across professional boundaries.
Desirable
• Working within a community development framework.
• Liaising with a wide range of agencies
Skills and attributes Essential
• Ability to establish effective networks and working relationships and build networks with a wide variety of agencies.
• Ability to make time for all individuals.
• Ability to create a sense of safety.
• Good presentation skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to establish effective and meaningful involvement of service users in developing and evaluating a service.
Personal qualities Essential
• Enthusiastic, innovative, warm friendly approach to work with young people.
• Showing initiative and creativity in developing new work.
• Comfortable in working without on-site management.
• Able to cope with competing demands and expectations from a variety of stakeholders.
